      Introduction

      React is one of the most popular front-end technologies today, with many courses, books, and tutorials available. So why am I offering a course on React Web Application Development? Over the years, I've worked with many developers who are new to React. These developers are talented but often face common challenges, which I've summarized into five main issues:
      1. Sticking too much to the framework: Developers struggle when they step outside the framework's comfort zone.
      2. Relying on pre-built components: When they need to customize or create their own components, they feel lost.
      3. Handling small projects well: They do fine with simple projects but struggle as the project grows.
      4. Manual testing: They are comfortable with manual testing but find automated testing challenging.
      5. Solo development comfort zone: They work well alone but struggle with team collaboration.
      
      These issues arise because many developers focus too much on the "latest frameworks" and don't spend enough time understanding the history of front-end development or gaining hands-on experience with new technologies. To help overcome these challenges, I’ve developed a two-step approach: "Learn from the Past" and "Hands-on Practice."

      Why Is Front-End Development Hard to Master?

      
      Let me share a bit about myself. I've worked at companies like IBM, Amazon, and FreeWheel, where I've spent 16 years in front-end development and architecture. Over the years, I’ve seen many front-end technologies come and go, but I've noticed that while the tools change, the core principles remain the same.
      Front-end development has become more complex, and developers need a strong foundation to handle it. The first step to solving the five challenges I mentioned is to "Learn from the Past." By understanding how front-end technologies have evolved, you can build a better understanding of the current tools and techniques.
      For example, many developers know about JSP, a popular technology from the early 2000s. However, fewer people know about its successor, JSF, and even fewer know the struggles it faced. By understanding the evolution of these tools, you can better appreciate the development of newer frameworks like React.

      Hands-on Practice: The Key to Mastery

      
      The second step to overcoming these challenges is Hands-on Practice. It's not just about spending time coding—it's about deepening your understanding. Think of learning as a spiral: you start by learning the basics (surface level), then dive deeper into how things work (underlying level), and then return to the basics with a better understanding.
      For example, CSS border-radius is a common design feature today, but it wasn't always supported by browsers. Over the years, I've worked with different solutions to create rounded borders before border-radius was widely supported. This experience helped me understand the broader concept of front-end engineering, which later made it easier to learn build tools like Gulp and Webpack.

      The Right Way to Learn React Web Development

      
      When it comes to React, I believe the best way to learn is through this formula: "New React Versions + Function Components & Hooks First + Team Collaboration = Effective Progress."

      Focus on Function Components and Hooks

      React has evolved over the years, and function components with Hooks are now the standard. I recommend focusing on these first, as they align with the latest trends and will help you get up to speed faster.
      

      Prepare for Real-World Challenges and Team Collaboration

      However, just learning React isn’t enough. When you start working on real projects, you’ll face more challenges. For example, at FreeWheel, we had to migrate a large Ruby-on-Rails application to multiple React single-page applications. This process required understanding both the old and new frameworks and maintaining them side by side for a while. This experience taught me that React development is about more than just React—it involves understanding front-end architecture, integrating with legacy code, and collaborating with a team.
